In a heartbeat life changed, and I was walking the path placed before me by my ancestors. I walked away from the traditional life for awhile : Tried to be NORMAL.
Twenty three years later I discovered that there was no life if I didn't return to my original path. Children, ex-husbands, parents and story, all these inexplicably wove a thread that resides within the sacredness of who I am. Indeed, I returned to Earth to heal, to find myself among the many labels acquired – storyteller, mother, priest, wife, healer, prophet, counselor, fraud, daughter – I am all of these and I am none of these. I honor all steps taken and believe the results to be me – unified. I believe without the solid foundation Grandpa gave me, and my dance through dysfunctional illusions, my practice today would lack the integrity so many have commented on.
In this sacred moment, Earth Mother calls to us. According to prophecies, we are in the 5th World now – a new type of emergence is happening – and for many a connection to the Earth, is imparative, a necessary indulgence that grounds us and heals us.''
>An Important Part
The tradition I grew up in is called tlish diyan, or snake medicine. As I have discovered, mythic forms of what I’ve been taught, exist in nearly EVERY tradition around the world. Even when there are no snakes, there are dragons, and we believe these two to be evolutional twins. When we step into their energies, they go to great lengths to buzz us. They free us from the past by immersing us in the energies of pro-creation. The mighty snake calling rains to nurture life on earth each Fall, brings the welcomed clap of thunder. Recognizing his sister, Snake protects the land, while Dragon awakens inside of each of us, and a gentle breeze calms the planet. Many react to troublesome lives so snake and dragon soothe the emotions, and thereafter, when we hear the thunder, we celebrate. I teach people how to track and live within the cycles of earth and how to find their voice when they feel small. I show them how to connect to the earth and love the land, and I teach them ways to develop relationship and heal their consciousness. When I have left this world, for my next great adventure, I will continue to watch the progression.
Coming to the land is acknowledging there is a plan to transform and grow. Working with the Earth and “I WONDER ONE” – our developing selves, we navigate the vastness of the universe. We pierce the darkness of separation and find the love of the Sacred Parents – Earth and Spirit, and thus enter a mindset that dances back and forth in time and our vision focuses on the potential of what can be.
It’s basic teamwork, and everyone has a role. We have dispersed to the 4 Directions, but the core of purpose, draws inspiration from when we walked this planet in full knowledge of her spirit.
We live in a time where traumas often outnumber success stories. Our task is to return to the light that perpetuates life. From time warping, we blend masculine and feminine into a unique crystalline life – ours alone. As the darkness gives way, we awaken. We find ourselves made new, perfectly encircles by rainbows. With help from our ancestors – well known to us – we raise ourselves on love and emotion. We grow up, living beautiful lives. We are who we create through sacredness and living life. We bear the future. In ancient times, this was known as Web Dreaming. Only then, according to the elders, peace and harmony were known.
We trace our love through Earth. We settle earth changes, as ancestors coax us on – we evolve the world – who is waiting for her children to return. We once were alone, and this was an illusion. Touch the Earth and hear her say, “I have waited for you, my beloved child, to feel my presence.” Slowly humans move into a shamanic, or metaphysical, containment. These are our steps – the Dance, the tlish diyan say – and we emerge from the clash of emotions so our future is affirmed.
Furthermore, we believe our ancestors are us. We meet ourselves in our dreams. All of this is made possible by the land, thus we all become sacred.
The power of life speaks to us. And whether you believe Earth to be alive or not, you are affected by her changes.
A tree or a cave may appear inviting or threatening, yet both have enormous power. The smells and sensations, like the traditional stories of prophecy I grew up with, are profound, and I learned the significance of Guardianship early. In truth, these are the foundation of our relationship with Earth.
To walk a trail from sacred site to sacred site each summer, visiting, refreshing altars, doing revitalizing rituals and introducing others to these places, was the long anticipated joy of vacation. Mystery awaited us in each turn – a small dancing light, a hidden face in the stone cliff wall, all a confirmation of the reality of Earth's magic – nía'guch'laada. To provide this service to the world was always a humbling honor, bestowed by the choice… of being born into a family that observed these practices.
For years Grandpa and I made páho… visual prayer offering, to leave at the places we visited. Each site carried a story of mythological significance in our family. To honor the land and the stories, was to love this history of who we were and where we were going. We believed our actions kept these places alive and vibrant. I've led many groups since Grandpa's crossing – preparing them – immersing them in the fountains of healing energy. Just as it was with Grandpa, a hearth connection was established. For that, I love the journey, to touch and be touched by something that transcends space and time. The Earth, plant that we revere as Mother, understands our intent.
Since the beginning of time, humans have created life sustainance in our walk upon the planet. To Earth People, pilgrimage is one of the most sacred of all our tasks. We make earth bundles and leave them in strategic portals between the worlds – for a moment we step outside of our mundane lives – wrap ourselves in the supernatural, and allow ourselves to be fluidly transfomed.
Today, I've slowed down, and the power places that once required my services have retracted, their time of power complete. Many new sites are birthing – opening since 2012 – and the rituals have changed.
Guardianship and Earth evolve, relationship reciprocity becomes a more mutal life acknowledgement, the Earth becomes alive – and we become that life. In the emergence of our new time dynamic, pilgrimage – still reveals mysterious wonders.
I have been blessed to do, the trips deep into the magic of Earth's power places, have been the most moving. My heart has been touched by the Ancestors – and that means everything to life, continuance, family, happiness and sacred intent.
For me, traveling all those years, leaving an offering of gratitude here and there, awakened and revealed information previously unknown. As my friend Katherine Cheshire, de-se-mana, once told me: "Shalako… Spirit Guardian, bring the Sacred Tablets out of hiding, bring people to these places, and tell the stories… then wait for the people to understand."
For the Love of the Earth shares my practice with the lands of sacred knowing, sharing, and waiting, and in some instances, I am still waiting. In sacred story, only the receiver can interpret the message, while a storyteller abides in honor, to wait, and smile when connection is made.
For the Love of the Earth is two stories symbolically entwined – through ancient myth and modern guardianship pilgrimages – for we are welcomed in our ceremonies.
